(Shooting) Notes to Self
SHOOT RAW
SHOOT RAW

SHOOT RAW
Did I mention that I should ALWAYS SHOOT RAW? Yeah, just do it. Don't be lazy.
The background is never wide enough. (why is that?)
Don't touch people's stuff. With my youth volunteer group shoot today (they were an awesome and good-looking group BTW!) I got the brilliant idea to have them wear their badges because I can't seem to remember names. I thought I'd be helpful and hand their badges to them, since I already had them in position for the portrait, and when I grabbed one of the badges, a cell phone appeared out of nowhere, nowhere I tell ya, and fell on the ground. argh. It only fell from low chair height, onto a carpeted floor, so I'm pretty sure it will be ok, but still. Could have been a bad thing. And, of course, I couldn't see their badges anyway, because, duh, group shot, they were covering each other's badges up.
Must figure out a way to remember names.
Shoot raw!!!
Figure out a way to study their poses etc. without staring at them an making them feel uncomfortable. I think I got a really great shot of the group, but one of the girls should have been turned in a little bit more. I think the answer is to make small talk while doing my work, but I am not good at that. I wonder if this will ever get easier for me?
Shoot raw.
I think that's it for today.

New one added Aug. 6, 2009 - if your subject (or one or more subjects if shooting a group) looks awkward or uncomfortable, REPOSE THEM! You CANNOT FIX THIS IN PHOTOSHOP. lol. I don't want to make them feel even more uncomfortable, by saying, "you look awkward" but somehow, tactfully repose them!

Latest Photo for Latest Heart-Felt Ad

This photo was taken today and was due to our ad agency today! The ad agency will add the heart she's "holding."
One 300 watt studio strobe, butterfly lighting, close to subject, reflector on the ground to soften chin shadows. I tried lighting the background with two speedlights (sb-600 and 900) set at 1/2 power, to make the cob-out easier. It didn't work real well though, because of no seemless background.
Here is the ad with the first photo I took:

July 17 - Photograph ExcellENT Surgery Center staff and clinic for brochure
July 22 - Photograph group of youth volunteers for youth volunteer thank-you ad
The one that has me most stressed is the group shot. I've not had very good results with group photographs, other than family photography. It's easier to pose families. I am determined to make a good portrait of this group of kids though! If I pull this off, it'll be my first successful non-family group portrait.

Postings and 4th of July!

I just noticed I've done at least one post each month in 2009. So I better do one for July before July slips away and I break my totally awesome posting streak!
Here are some snaps from last weekend, 4th of July celebration. We had a block party on our street.
Sophia's first experience with "snappers" or "poppers."

"Throw it on the ground"

Pop!

Sophia had just been walking for two weeks last weekend. She was getting around very well, and did not want to hold mommy's or daddy's hand, she wanted to do it on her own.

"Let ... go ... of ... me"
"What?"
"Okay, maybe holding mommy and daddy's hands isn't so bad, this is fun!"

"That was fun, but I still prefer to walk all by myself!"
